It came out of the dark

Dark Night Falls slowly....???

Most of us are always scared of bats, thinking they are dangerous creatures. But the fact is that, bats are not dangerous creatures, they are shy animals that live in bundles and only come out at night to search for food. Over the past five (5) years, the bat population has been decreasing, more than a million bats have disappeared and endangered species are threatened. The cause of this pandemic is the ‘White nose syndrome’ (WNS), it’s a fungus called ‘Geomyces Destructuans’, it is attracted to cold and its mainly infectious towards the skin.  This fungus unlike other skin decease syndromes, doesn’t attack dead areas of the skin only. Instead it (fungus) attacks and destroys areas of the skin where there are living tissues in ‘hibernating bats’.  Most of the bats found in the United States hibernate in caves and abandon mines, thus they are vulnerable to the decease. Some of the bats that are threatened are endangered species such as the Indiana bats, gray bats, Virginia and Ozark big eared bats. White nose syndrome infects the wings of these bats, destroying the outer layers of their (wings) skin. Bats need their wings for warmth and water, but once the fungus starts destroying their wings by ‘poking holes’ through their skin. They tend to fly out into the cold in search of food, thus they are susceptible to unexpected dangers, causing a decline in their population. Efforts are already underway to solve this crisis and it involves everyone in the community.
